Family caregivers provide $300 billion worth of unpaid services each year. Nearly 1/4 of American households (over 22 million households; 32% of the total) are involved in elder caregiving. This is a three-fold increase over the past 10 years. Today, 1 in 7 Americans cares for a loved one. In 20 years the number will be 1 in 5-a 20% increase. By the year 2000, the vast majority of 50-year olds will have at least one living parent. This will be the largest group of caregivers in history. 64.2% of caregivers are employed. 51.8% are employed full-time.
